Prince Harry on Bringing Meghan to The UK: “It’s Dangerous”

In a candid interview for the documentary ‘Tabloids on Trial,’ which aired on ITV, Prince Harry spoke openly about his concerns for his family’s safety, citing the intense scrutiny from the British tabloids. The Duke of Sussex highlighted the dangers his wife, Meghan Markle, faces from potential threats incited by negative press coverage, stating, “All it takes is one lone actor… and whether it’s a knife or acid, whatever it is. These are things that are of genuine concern to me. It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife to this country.”

Since stepping down from their royal duties and relocating to California in 2020, Harry and Meghan have largely stayed away from the UK, with Harry visiting occasionally. Meghan’s visits have been even rarer, the most recent being for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022. Despite reports of the couple considering a return to the UK, Harry clarified that such a move is unlikely if their safety cannot be guaranteed.

The prince also touched on his strained relationship with the British media, which he believes exacerbates threats to his family. His legal battle with Mirror Group Newspapers, which resulted in a favourable ruling last year over phone hacking, underscores his commitment to challenging invasive media practices.

Harry expressed that this issue has contributed to the ongoing rift within the royal family, particularly with his father, King Charles III, and brother, Prince William. He noted that their reluctance to challenge the press’s intrusion is a “central piece” of their strained relations.

Harry revealed that he had the support of his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, in his fight against the tabloids. He fondly recalled her understanding and encouragement, stating, “She’s very much up there saying, ‘See this through to the end,’ without question.”
