Marvel fans are giddy with excitement after Robert Downey Jr. shared a cryptic Thanksgiving-themed artwork hinting at a major twist: a possible reunion of his iconic Iron Man persona with his newly revealed villain—Doctor Doom—in the much-anticipated 'Avengers: Doomsday.' The comic-style Iron Man and Doctor Doom are depicted in the graphic, locking hands, to split a wishbone, a symbolic gesture that has rekindled rumours of a crossover, dual duty, or even Tony Stark's unexpected resurrection.

The tease has rekindled interest in how the studio intends to combine previous and future threads of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), perhaps rewriting the boundaries of what fans expect from a superhero saga.

Iron Man dominated the MCU for more than ten years, and Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal contributed to the franchise's international success. From 'Iron Man' (2008) to 'Avengers: Endgame' (2019), Iron Man came to represent bravery, selflessness, and scientific prowess—all of which were crucial to the MCU's enormous commercial and cultural success.

Conversely, one of Marvel's most formidable antagonists is Doctor Doom, a cunning, despotic mastermind with a long history in comic books. With 'Avengers: Doomsday,' Downey will make his villainous debut as Doom, a shift that has stunned fans and has opened the door to bold new storytelling directions.

Amidst all the buzz, further excitement was sparked by the latest Thanksgiving artwork, which features Iron Man and Doctor Doom together. A multiverse mash-up, a dual role for Downey, or even a twist that brings Tony Stark back in some way are all being speculated. Fans responded almost immediately with questions: "Is Iron Man coming back?," "Dual roles incoming?," or "Iron Man vs Doctor Doom in Doomsday?!?"

What 'Avengers: Doomsday' Could Look Like—A Bold New Chapter for the MCU

'Avengers: Doomsday' is shaping up to be a landmark film in the MCU. Major franchises, like the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and others, are all set to be brought together in the film under what is said to be a multiverse-heavy plot. Rumours and concept art leaks suggest that the movie may incorporate several Doctor Doom variations, including a "Council of Dooms," which would reflect a darker, more nuanced interpretation of the MCU's villain stories.

One of the biggest twists in MCU history might occur if Downey plays both Tony Stark (or a version) and Doom, or if Iron Man and Doctor Doom reunite or clash in the movie. Some theories suggest Doom might even be a Stark doppelgänger or alternate-universe version, which could allow fans to see familiar faces in unexpected roles.

With the movie scheduled for its release on 18th December, 2026, and with no official plot specifics disclosed thus far, every hint, such as Downey's wishbone post, serves as a fuel for the growing speculations.

From Hero to Villain: Robert Downey Jr.'s New Role—and What It Means for the MCU

For a whole generation of moviegoers, Robert Downey Jr. embodied Iron Man. His return, as the evil Doctor Doom rather than a hero, is a daring move by Marvel that might change the MCU's future. Iron Man's slick, high-tech clothes contrast sharply with Doom's dramatic, medieval-inspired armour and hooded cloak in the concept art that has been made public thus far. The design appears to indicate a darker, more epic tone for Doomsday; it might also allude to a plot akin to that of "Battleworld," which is evocative of several comic arcs.
