Sabrina Carpenter Says She Was The Only One Who Wanted to Release ‘Espresso’

Sabrina Carpenter has made waves in the music world with her latest hit, ‘Espresso’. Released on April 11, the track quickly climbed the charts, reaching Number Three on the Billboard Hot 100 and securing the top spot in the UK and 15 other countries. As of today, August 6, the song has hit a remarkable milestone: one billion streams, making it the third fastest song to achieve this on the platform. Even Adele has given it a nod, calling it “my jam”.

Despite the song’s success, Carpenter revealed to Variety that she was initially alone in her desire to release ‘Espresso’ as the lead single from her upcoming sixth album, ‘Short N’ Sweet’. “I was completely alone in wanting to release ‘Espresso,’” she said. “Not so much from my immediate team. But when it came to ‘the powers above,’” she air-quoted, “There was a lot of questioning behind whether it made sense. But they trusted me in the end, and I was happy that I believed in myself at that moment.”

Island Records co-CEO Imran Majid also praised Carpenter’s instincts and vision, noting, “It’s no accident that everything is falling into place the way she always wanted. Sabrina’s instincts and creative vision are incredible. She’s always thinking 10 steps ahead of the market.”

It’s fair to say that ‘Espresso’ has been the song of the summer. It held the Number One spot in the UK for a full month earlier this year. The Official Charts Company also revealed that it was the fourth-biggest song of the year in the country at that point. Its ubiquity was such that listeners noticed Spotify playing it after songs by various artists, from Fontaines D.C. to Kendrick Lamar.
