Fans hoping for a return to Salem may have to wait a little longer, as 'Hocus Pocus 3' appears to be stalled in development, according to a recent update from Sarah Jessica Parker. More than two years after Disney confirmed the beloved franchise would continue following the streaming success of 'Hocus Pocus 2', progress on the third film remains uncertain.

During a Sunday night appearance on 'Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen', Parker addressed the status of 'Hocus Pocus 3' in response to a fan question from viewers based in London — a city tied to earlier unverified rumours suggesting the film was gearing up for production. Parker revealed that no concrete developments had occurred and that, while the cast is interested, the project hasn't officially moved forward.

She emphasised that the desire to return exists, adding that there have been some preliminary discussions behind the scenes. However, it’s unclear whether these conversations include co-stars Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy, who returned alongside Parker as the iconic Sanderson Sisters in the 2022 sequel.

What We Know About 'Hocus Pocus 3' Development?

Despite Disney’s announcement in mid-2023 that the third instalment was in development, progress appears slow. Screenwriter Jen D’Angelo had previously shared that the creative team was still working through the story phase. She mentioned that they were exploring numerous narrative directions and new characters, especially hoping to expand on Hannah Waddingham’s "Mother Witch" introduced in 'Hocus Pocus 2'. D’Angelo also revealed she had crafted several potential scenarios for Thora Birch’s return as Dani, although the actress ultimately did not appear in the second film.

Bette Midler, in a June 2024 interview on 'The Jess Cagle Show', noted that Disney was proceeding with caution, describing the process as gentle and slow-moving. Her comment aligned with the general sense of uncertainty surrounding the project’s timeline.

Meanwhile, Omri Katz, who played Max in the original 1993 film, expressed his enthusiasm about returning to the franchise. He stated that he would gladly reprise his role if Disney approached him, and he hoped to reunite with his original castmates to create a fun continuation of the story.

Although fans eagerly await more definitive news, Disney has not issued any recent statements regarding 'Hocus Pocus 3'. The second film, which debuted on Disney+ in September 2022, was met with critical acclaim and became a record-breaking hit for the platform.

As it stands, the future of 'Hocus Pocus 3' remains in a holding pattern — but with the stars onboard and fans still casting their spell of support, the magic might just return when the time is right.
