In a candid conversation on SiriusXM’s ‘The Howard Stern Show,’ the renowned actor of ‘Argylle’, divulged the serendipitous tale of how he crossed paths with Shay Shariatzadeh, his beloved wife of nearly four years. The encounter unfolded at a local Vancouver bar nestled in British Columbia, Canada, during the airing of Super Bowl LIII in February.
Reflecting on the fateful rendezvous, Cena, hailing from Massachusetts, revealed how fate intervened when he reluctantly stepped out of his Vancouver apartment at the insistence of a friend to catch the championship game at a nearby bar. “I wasn’t looking, but damn, man, it just found me,” he shared, reminiscing about the unexpected turn of events that led to him finding love.

Engrossed in the game’s fervour, Cena’s attention veered towards a group of five individuals seated at a nearby table, eclipsing even the excitement of the match. “So we watched the game, and then the table sitting right across from us — this group of five people walked in. Man, I stopped watching the game. I didn’t even know it was over,” he recollected, illustrating the captivating moment.
Amongst the group, Cena’s gaze lingered upon Shay Shariatzadeh, then 35, who was accompanied by her friends. Despite his intrigue, it wasn’t until one of Shariatzadeh’s companions sought a photo with the actor and WWE star that Cena mustered the courage to initiate conversation.
Reflecting on his initial hesitation, Cena candidly admitted, “I was such a d*ck, I was so bad. Here I am — hell this was half a decade [ago] — I’m 40 and I’m too scared to approach this girl.”
Their courtship flourished, culminating in Cena’s heartfelt proposal to Shariatzadeh, a momentous occasion that unfolded at their home just before Valentine’s Day. Sharing the tender memory, Cena disclosed how the spontaneous proposal unfolded, veering from his meticulously planned scenario while filming ‘The Suicide Squad’ in Panama.
