‘Silk: Spider Society’ Live-Action Series Cancelled at Amazon

Amazon has decided to scrap the live-action series ‘Silk: Spider Society,’ which was initially greenlit in November 2022. The show was part of a deal with Sony Pictures Television to develop a range of shows based on Marvel characters that Sony controls. It was supposed to debut on the MGM+ linear channel in the US before launching globally on Prime Video.

Angela Kang, known for her work on ‘The Walking Dead,’ was set to be the executive producer and showrunner. Kang had also signed a multi-year overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, and she will continue under that agreement. Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal were also on board as executive producers.

Despite Amazon’s decision to drop the show, Sony is planning to shop the series to other potential buyers. Earlier in the year, it was reported by The Ankler that Amazon had shut down the writers’ room for ‘Silk,’ releasing the writing staff to find other work. At that time, it was mentioned that Amazon wanted to refocus the show to appeal more to a male audience, similar to its successful series like ‘The Boys,’ ‘Gen V,’ ‘Fallout,’ ‘Reacher’ and ‘Jack Ryan.’

The series was set to follow Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker. The plot would have centred on her escape from imprisonment and her search for her missing family, ultimately becoming the superhero known as Silk.

The cancellation of ‘Silk’ comes just days after Amazon announced a ‘Spider-Man Noir’ live-action series starring Nicolas Cage, with Lord, Miller, and Pascal also attached as executive producers.
