Sony Pictures is preparing to take another swing at its Spider-Man universe.

In a recent appearance on The Town, studio CEO Tom Rothman confirmed that Sony plans to reboot its interconnected world of Marvel characters tied to Spider-Man at some point in the future. When asked whether the larger live-action Spider-Verse was finished, Rothman made it clear that it is not. He also indicated that the studio intends to return to those characters and start fresh, with a new direction and new actors leading the charge.

Rothman suggested that pulling back for a while could actually help the franchise. He believes scarcity creates value and that giving audiences a break can make them more excited when the characters return.

Sony's Control Over Universe

Sony has controlled the theatrical rights since 1999. The studio first found huge success with Sam Raimi's trilogy starring Tobey Maguire in the 2000s. A later reboot led by Andrew Garfield delivered mixed results. Eventually, Sony partnered with Marvel Studios to introduce Tom Holland as Spider-Man in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming,' firmly placing the character inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In 2018, Sony launched its own line of spinoffs beginning with 'Venom.' That was followed by 'Venom: Let There Be Carnage,' 'Morbius,' 'Madame Web,' 'Venom: The Last Dance' and 'Kraven the Hunter.' None of these films actually featured Spider-Man himself, and most were met with poor reviews and disappointing box office returns.

If the studio truly is pressing reset, that likely means audiences won't see actors like Tom Hardy, Dakota Johnson, Jared Leto or Aaron Taylor-Johnson continuing in those roles. Still, this is the same studio that united multiple Spider-Man generations in 'Spider-Man: No Way Home,' so surprises are always possible.

Sony's Next Project

Looking ahead, Sony's next big-screen Spidey project is 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The film will feature Holland's Peter Parker sharing the screen with Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, with a release set for 31st July.

Sony is also expanding into television. The studio is teaming up with Amazon MGM Studios for a live-action series titled 'Spider-Noir.' The show will star Nicolas Cage as a 1930s-era version of Spider-Man in an alternate New York City. Cage previously voiced a version of the character in 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,' though it remains unclear whether the new series will connect to Sony's larger reboot plans.
