Director Jon Watts has revealed that 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' underwent a major script change after fans on Reddit accurately predicted how Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire would be introduced in the film. The 2021 Marvel blockbuster brought together three versions of Spider-Man — Tom Holland, Garfield, and Maguire — in a multiverse mash-up that thrilled audiences and earned over $1.9 billion globally.

During an interview with Collider, Watts explained that while developing the script for 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', the original plan involved a dramatic moment: Peter Parker, mourning Aunt May’s death, would witness portals open on a rooftop, revealing the other Spider-Men. This emotional sequence was initially how the creative team intended to introduce Maguire and Garfield into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

However, the director stumbled upon Reddit fan theories that outlined that exact scenario, including the rooftop setting and Doctor Strange’s portals. Realising their plan was no longer surprising, Watts decided the film needed to pivot.

Change in Plans For 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'

Rather than sticking to what fans had anticipated, the production team relocated the reveal to an unexpected setting: Ned Leeds’ house, where his Filipino grandmother becomes an unwitting host to multiversal chaos. This change was designed to defy fan expectations and add a layer of surprise to an already ambitious story.

Watts likened the move to classic storytelling misdirection, citing silent film legend Buster Keaton’s philosophy of letting the audience think they’ve figured it out, only to take them somewhere entirely different. The director emphasised that he enjoys crafting stories for savvy viewers who understand genre conventions and crave creative twists.

The final version of 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' proved that the gamble paid off. The film became the highest-grossing non-Avengers entry in the MCU and remains the third most successful film in the franchise’s history.

Since the release, Tom Holland has continued to make headlines, most recently for being shortlisted to play the next James Bond — a move that has sparked mixed reactions among fans.
