Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, known for shaping the landscape of modern cinema with his iconic sci-fi and action films, has revealed the one genre he still wants to tackle — the Western. During a recent event hosted by Universal Pictures in his honour, the Oscar-winning director shared his long-standing desire to direct a Western movie, a genre that has eluded him throughout his storied career.
Although Steven Spielberg has directed numerous blockbusters such as 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial', 'War of the Worlds', 'Ready Player One', and the 'Jurassic Park' series, he has yet to helm a traditional Western. However, he did serve as a producer on the 2005 Western miniseries 'Into the West', which was well-received. Some also argue that the 'Indiana Jones' franchise carries Western-inspired elements with its frontier action and old-world adventure vibe.

Steven Spielberg Wishes to Direct a Western Movie
Despite these connections, Steven Spielberg acknowledged that directing a proper Western has always been a goal. He shared that he still has a strong appetite for the genre and hopes to explore it someday, calling it something that has managed to escape him over the decades. His admiration for the classic American Western remains strong, and fans are eager to see how Spielberg’s storytelling mastery could redefine the genre.
This revelation comes shortly after Steven Spielberg wrapped production on his upcoming untitled UFO-themed sci-fi film. The project, based on a story by Spielberg himself, features a screenplay by David Koepp, best known for 'Jurassic Park'. The movie brings together a star-studded cast, including Emily Blunt, Wyatt Russell, among notable actors. Produced under the Amblin Entertainment banner alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger and Chris Brigham, the movie is slated for a June 2026 release by Universal Pictures.

Spielberg’s last directorial project, 'The Fabelmans' (2022), was a deeply personal movie inspired by his early life and passion for filmmaking. The film earned seven Academy Award nominations and reaffirmed his ability to blend emotion with cinematic grandeur.
While Steven Spielberg is best known for directing, he is also active as a producer on several high-profile upcoming projects. These include 'Jurassic World: Rebirth' starring Scarlett Johansson, 'The Thursday Murder Club' for Netflix with Pierce Brosnan, and the Apple TV+ psychological thriller series 'Cape Fear'.
With his continued involvement in diverse projects, Steven Spielberg shows no signs of slowing down. His announcement about wanting to direct a Western adds another exciting chapter to his ongoing career.
