Steve Blackman of 'The Umbrella Academy' has recently been accused of "toxic, bullying, manipulative and retaliatory behaviour" by twelve former writers and support staff, according to a report by Rolling Stone. Among the various complaints is an incident involving a female writing team whose contracts were unexpectedly terminated.
The allegations extend to claims that Blackman demanded "unwavering loyalty" from his staff. Several former team members have reported that he would reduce roles or terminate the contracts of those who disagreed with him. Additionally, some have accused him of making sexist, lewd, and disparaging comments.

In response to these allegations, a spokesperson for Blackman informed Rolling Stone that he had worked with the Human Resources department to ensure that the women's contracts were concluded "in full compliance with all policies and regulations." They added that the decision was "solely based on performance and budget." Blackman has denied all other allegations of retaliation.
Further accusations have emerged, suggesting that Blackman made sexist, homophobic and transphobic remarks. Rolling Stone reported that, in text messages provided to Human Resources as part of an initial 2023 complaint, Blackman allegedly expressed frustration about Elliot Page's decision to come out as transgender on the show. The messages reportedly included statements like, "Elliot [Page] wants to come out as trans on the show. As Ivan. Oh my f—king God. K*ll me now."

Page publicly came out as transgender in December 2020.
A representative for Blackman explained that his initial hesitation was due to the amount of work required to rewrite the season three scripts. They added that his reaction was not intended to show a lack of support for Page.
Blackman himself has previously addressed the inclusion of Page's storyline in the show, stating to TVLine that it was "very important" to include. He emphasised the desire to tell a story that was "pro-trans, authentic, sensitive, and show that families can accept trans people in their lives, and it does not have to be a negative thing, as it’s often portrayed in the media."

Page had also praised the handling of his transition on the show, calling it "one of the most special things about this is how it’s handled."
Universal Content Productions, the producer of The Umbrella Academy, launched an investigation into the allegations in 2023. Rolling Stone reports that they were only able to substantiate claims that Blackman had made "inappropriate and unprofessional remarks" and used "foul and derogatory language."

In a statement to Rolling Stone, Blackman’s spokesperson asserted: “Over six years and four seasons overseeing thousands of crew, actors, and writers, Steve Blackman led 'The Umbrella Academy' to become a beloved series with devoted fans, enthralling stories, and a dedicated team making it all possible.
“These allegations from a handful of disgruntled employees are completely false and outrageous, and in no way reflect the collaborative, respectful, and successful working environment Mr. Blackman has cultivated.”
