The screenplay for ‘The Color Purple’ was crafted by screenwriter Marcus Gardley, drawing inspiration from both Alice Walker’s 1982 novel and the musical adaptation. The musical, which featured a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, served as a creative foundation for the movie.

Cast of ‘The Color Purple’

In the 2023 rendition of ‘The Color Purple’, Fantasia Barrino takes on the role of Celie in her debut feature film performance, while Danielle Brooks embodies the character of Sofia. The star-studded cast also features notable names such as Taraji P. Henson, Halle Bailey, Louis Gossett Jr., Corey Hawkins, David Alan Grier, Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, H.E.R., Ciara, Jon Batiste and Deon Cole.

Celie, portrayed by Barrino, was originally played by Whoopi Goldberg in the 1985 film. The character is a Black woman navigating life in the Jim Crow South. Barrino had previously depicted Celie on Broadway in the mid-2000s and initially had reservations about revisiting the character for the movie.

Blitz Bazawule, the director of ‘The Color Purple’ musical movie, has earned praise from Oprah Winfrey since assuming the role.
