‘The Crow’ 2024: Alex Proyas Is Not Happy With The Reboot

Alex Proyas, the director behind the cult classic ‘The Crow’ starring Brandon Lee, has weighed in on the upcoming reboot featuring Bill Skarsgård. The original film, released in 1994, holds a special place in the hearts of fans, especially considering it was Lee’s final role before his tragic death.

After the release of first-look images and a trailer for the reboot, fans took to social media to express their disappointment. Many criticised the revamped appearance of the lead character and the overall vibe of the trailer. Comments on the trailer’s YouTube page reflect a sentiment of loyalty to the original, with comparisons drawn between the new look and other pop culture figures.

Proyas, in response to the negativity surrounding the reboot, took to Facebook to share his thoughts. He expressed a lack of joy in seeing criticism towards fellow filmmakers and acknowledged that the cast and crew likely had good intentions. However, he emphasised the significance of ‘The Crow’ as a legacy of Brandon Lee’s talent and tragic loss, urging for it to remain untarnished.

Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, portrayed the character Eric Draven in the 1994 film, a role that became iconic despite his untimely death during filming due to an accident on set. The story follows Draven’s resurrection and quest for revenge after he and his girlfriend are killed.

The upcoming reboot, directed by Rupert Sanders, aims to pay tribute to Lee’s memory while presenting a fresh take on the horror-revenge love story. Sanders highlighted Skarsgård’s portrayal of the Crow, describing it as embodying a “disturbing beauty” that honours Lee’s original vision.

Despite the controversy surrounding the reboot, Sanders hopes that Lee would be proud of their efforts to bring the story back to life.

‘The Crow’ will hit cinemas on 7th June 2024.
