The Doobie Brothers Reunite With Michael McDonald for First Album in 44 Years

Fans of The Doobie Brothers can anticipate more than just tour dates in 2024. The iconic rock band, reuniting with their core lineup in 2019 for a delayed 50th-anniversary tour due to the pandemic, has been consistently on the road ever since.

With a recently announced extensive tour for 2024, featuring original members Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons alongside longtimers Michael McDonald and John McFee, there’s an additional reason for excitement – the release of their first album with McDonald in 44 years.

In an interview, Simmons and Johnston shared their enthusiasm for creating new music with McDonald who rejoined the band for the 50th-anniversary tour after his initial stint from 1975 to 1982. Simmons expressed, “It’s very exciting. At one point I said, ‘Hey, we’re doing all these dates… As long as we’re doing this it would make sense to do a record. I think people would really get a kick out of that.'”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers highlighted the fulfilling experience of collaborating with McDonald in the studio after decades, as McDonald last appeared on 1980’s ‘One Step Closer’ and hadn’t been on an LP with Johnston since 1975’s ‘Takin’ It to the Streets.’ Although no title or official release date has been announced, Simmons confirmed that the songs are complete, with the project about halfway towards completion.

While details about the new tracks are sparse, one collaboration titled ‘Walk This Road’ features lead vocals by McDonald and Johnston, along with a guest performance by R&B/soul legend Mavis Staples. As the band embarks on a 38-date North American tour later this year, it remains uncertain if they’ll showcase the new material.

However, the excitement extends beyond music, as McDonald is set to release a memoir titled ‘What a Fool Believes’ on 21st May, co-authored with actor Paul Reiser. The memoir delves into McDonald’s journey and collaborations throughout his illustrious career.
