‘The Fall Guy’ Dog Was Inspired by Eva Mendes’ Pet, Hugo

Hugo, the furry co-star of Ryan Gosling in ‘The Fall Guy,’ pays tribute to Eva Mendes, who passed away.

Ryan Gosling and director David Leitch discussed their upcoming movie, ‘The Fall Guy,’ during a post-premiere Q&A at SXSW. They disclosed how Gosling’s personal experiences were incorporated into the film. One of them is a dog that Gosling’s character Colt keeps as a companion; it was modelled after Eva Mendes’s late beloved pet, Hugo.

Gosling described how Mendes’s old Belgian Malinois, Hugo, was the inspiration for Jean Claude, the movie’s dog character who can only obey orders in French. Gosling clarified during the Q&A, “Eva used to have a dog named Hugo who was a Belgian Malinois who was an attack dog.” “His language was French only. This is my tribute to him as he has now passed away.”

In ‘The Fall Guy,’ Colt’s search for missing action star Tom Ryder becomes entwined with his relationship with Jean Claude. The dog’s inclusion was praised by director Leitch as a clever decision that improved the action scenes in the movie.

Gosling and Mendes, who got together on the set of ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ in 2012 and started dating soon after, have a close relationship with their daughters, Esmeralda and Amada.

Mendes has previously acknowledged her close relationship with Hugo, calling him “so special” and highlighting the relationship’s enduring quality. ‘The Fall Guy,’ which is slated for release in theatres on 3rd May, also stars Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, Winston Duke, and Stephanie Hsu.
