Tom Holland Played a Surprising Role in Oxford’s Word of The Year Selection

Tom Holland played a part in the choice of the 2023 Oxford Word of the Year, which turned out to be “Rizz.”

This term, widely used by Generation Z, refers to ‘style, charm, or attractiveness’ and triumphed over contenders like ‘Swiftie’ (a devoted fan of Taylor Swift), and ‘prompt’ (an instruction for an artificial intelligence program). 

The popularity of ‘Rizz’ soared after YouTuber and Twitch streamer Kai Cenat introduced “rizz tip” videos in 2022. The term went viral when Tom Holland addressed his ‘rizz’ in a BuzzFeed interview, humorously stating, “I have no rizz whatsoever. I have limited rizz.”

Holland’s reply sparked the proliferation of numerous memes and a significant increase in the usage of the word. The term has become widely prevalent on the internet, with billions of views for the hashtag ‘rizz’ on TikTok.

President of Oxford Languages Remarks 

Discussing the campaign for this year and the selection of Oxford Word of the Year 2023, Casper Grathwohl, President of Oxford Languages, remarked, “Rizz is a term that has surged in popularity on social media, illustrating how language that gains intense traction within specific social circles—and may eventually lose its appeal—can transition into the mainstream.”

He added, “This narrative is age-old, dating back to the origins of language, but what used to take years for stories of linguistic evolution and expansion can now unfold within weeks or months.

The surge in usage data for ‘rizz’ underscores the fact that words and phrases originating from internet culture are increasingly integrating into everyday language, shaping language trends for the foreseeable future.”
