DC Studios has officially tapped Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries to take on the role of the iconic Batman villain in its upcoming horror-tinged feature, ‘Clayface’. The casting concludes an extended search that had centred on emerging British talent, with actors like Jack O’Connell, Tom Blyth, and George MacKay all reportedly considered. However, insiders revealed that DC heads James Gunn and Peter Safran decided to dig deeper before landing on Harries.

The film, directed by James Watkins — known for helming ‘Speak No Evil’ — is expected to take a grounded, horror-leaning approach, with a budget set around $40 million. The story reportedly follows a struggling B-movie actor who transforms into a monstrous, shape-shifting figure after injecting himself with a mysterious substance in a desperate bid to remain relevant.

Mike Flanagan, a mainstay in the horror genre, penned the screenplay for ‘Clayface’, which is slated for release on 11th September 2026. Filming is expected to begin later this year. The project will be produced by ‘The Batman’ director Matt Reeves, alongside Lynn Harris, as well as Gunn and Safran.

Tom Rhys Harries Lands Breakout Role After a Decade in British Film and TV

The role marks a significant career moment for Harries, 35, who has spent over a decade building a steady body of work across British film, television, and stage. Among Harries’ early roles was a part in the BBC fantasy drama ‘Jekyll & Hyde’, along with his West End debut in ‘Mojo’, where he shared the stage with Ben Whishaw and Rupert Grint. More recently, he appeared in the AppleTV+ thriller ‘Suspicion’, Netflix’s ‘White Lines’, and featured in the 2023 Gerard Butler-led action film ‘Kandahar’.
