Tori Kelly Talks About New Album ‘TORI’: “I’m Stepping Into My Power”

Tori Kelly recently opened up to NME about her latest musical endeavour, her fifth studio album titled ‘TORI’. The California-born singer-songwriter expressed her excitement, noting that she finally feels like she’s truly embracing her craft and fulfilling her dreams.

During her visit to London, Kelly was busy working on the soundtrack for a popular TV show, although the details are yet to be revealed. Reflecting on her previous visit to the UK four years ago, she recalled being here for what was supposed to be her debut world tour.

However, due to the sudden surge in COVID cases in March 2020, she was forced to cancel the remaining tour dates. Despite this setback, Kelly didn’t let the pandemic hold her back. In 2020, she released the R&B-infused ‘Solitude’ EP and the festive ‘A Tori Kelly Christmas’ album, marking a new chapter in her career leading up to the highly anticipated ‘TORI’.

Speaking to NME, Kelly shared insights into the album’s creation, revealing that it’s been four years in the making. She described her journey of healing from personal struggles and rediscovering her joy for music in the studio. Collaborating with pop polymath Jon Bellion in 2021, they worked together to infuse the album with a blend of sounds inspired by the late ’90s to early ’00s pop-R&B era.

Drawing from her own experiences and musical influences, she aimed to strike a balance between nostalgia and freshness, blending different styles to create something unique.

Kelly also touched on the significance of her collaboration with K-pop artist Kim Chae-won from LE SSERAFIM on the track ‘Spruce’, highlighting the global reach of her music and the connections she’s made through her YouTube covers.

Last year, Kelly faced a health scare with blood clots in her legs and lungs, just days before the release of her ‘Tori’ EP. Despite the challenges, she remained transparent with her fans and continued to pursue her passion for music. Now healed and feeling revitalised, Kelly is embracing life with a renewed sense of purpose and creativity.
