Uma Thurman recently revealed an unexpected source of anxiety when it comes to acting — eating on camera. During an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’, the Oscar-nominated actress explained that while she has no problem taking on intense action scenes, dining in front of others during a scene makes her uneasy.
She shared with Fallon that she had once filled out a DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) checklist and was intrigued to find that “eating in front of strangers” was among the questions. Though she was ultimately told she was “just fine”, Thurman said that particular question stuck with her.
The ‘Kill Bill’ star elaborated on why food scenes feel especially challenging. She pointed out that such scenes typically involve multiple takes, and actors don’t get to choose what they’re eating. She added that having to chew, speak, and swallow in coordination often leads her to worry about choking mid-line.

Fallon chimed in with a humorous observation, noting how Brad Pitt seems to be constantly eating in his films — whether it’s an apple or even an onion — and appears entirely unfazed.
Uma Thurman Says a Perfect Eating Scene Is Still on Her Bucket List
Despite her acclaimed career, Thurman admitted there’s one thing she hasn’t quite mastered yet. She said that doing a proper eating scene remains on her acting bucket list, comparing it to something bold and personal like skinny-dipping — an experience she feels is worth ticking off.
Thurman, who is set to appear in ‘The Old Guard 2’, seemed to suggest that even after years in the industry, there are still moments and challenges that keep the work fresh and personal.
