Kate Bush has announced the upcoming release of her self-directed animated short film titled ‘Little Shrew’. Following its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, the short will screen across the UK on 24th June, just ahead of the WWII resistance film ‘From Hilde, With Love’. It will be shown in all Picturehouse cinemas and select additional theatres.
The film centres around a Caucasian pygmy shrew navigating a war-torn city—Bush explained that the creature serves as a metaphor for children affected by conflict. She shared that the story was inspired by the war in Ukraine and expressed her desire to use animation to draw attention to the plight of young people trapped in such circumstances.
Bush revealed that she initially imagined the story around a young girl, but later chose the pygmy shrew to better evoke empathy, describing it as a “tiny, fragile little creature”. She added that the shrew’s moonlit journey, set amid a devastated city and guided by a spiritual sense of “hope”, represents a search for meaning and survival during wartime.

The film features Bush’s own track ‘Snowflake’ from her 2011 album ‘50 Words For Snow’. While the song was originally written to highlight her son’s voice before adolescence, Bush noted that it has taken on new emotional weight within the context of this film.
