Unrealised 1990s ‘Captain America’ Cartoon Nearly Came to Life

Marvel almost released a solo ‘Captain America’ cartoon in the ’90s, complete with a WWII-set teaser starring “Tommy Tompkins” and scripts by Steve Englehart. Marvel’s 1996 bankruptcy axed the project, leaving fans to wonder what might have been.

Marvel’s First Avenger almost starred in his own animated series during the 1990s. Despite numerous guest appearances across shows like ‘The Marvel Superheroes’, ‘X-Men’ and ‘Spider-Man’, Captain America never headlined a solo cartoon—until a shelved Saban–Marvel collaboration nearly changed that.

In 1983, writer Jason Brewer pitched a concept to Sunbow Entertainment in which the star-spangled hero would operate as a presidential secret agent. Although that early idea failed to gain traction, Marvel renewed efforts in the mid-90s alongside Saban Entertainment, creators of the popular ‘X-Men’ animation and the brief-lived ‘Silver Surfer’ series.

Cartoon veteran Will Meugniot, his wife Jo and storyboard artist Dave Simons developed the new ‘Captain America’ proposal, setting the adventures in World War II. A one-minute teaser was produced, depicting a frail Steve Rogers transformed into a super-soldier—only this time officially named Tommy Tompkins, with “Steve Rogers” as a military alias.

Legendary comic writer Steve Englehart was tapped to pen episodes, including one entitled “Skullhenge”, which would have seen the Red Skull attempting to reconfigure Stonehenge into a gigantic swastika. However, Englehart later revealed that children’s-TV standards forbade naming the villains “Nazis”, forcing the series to sanitise its historical context.

Bankruptcy Halts Series and Fans Left Wondering

Ultimately, Marvel’s financial collapse in 1996 proved the final blow. Facing bankruptcy, the company cut back on animated ventures, leading to the swift end of contemporaries like ‘Spider-Man Unlimited’. As a result, Meugniot’s ‘Captain America’ never advanced beyond its promotional reel.

Fans are left to speculate whether this lost series—or rival cancelled projects such as Mike Mignola’s ‘Thor’—would have delivered the patriotic hero the animated spotlight he richly deserves.
