Earlier this year, fans got an unexpected and dramatic first glimpse of 'Verity' when bloody set photos from the film leaked online. Now, director Michael Showalter is sharing his reaction to the moment that quickly took over social media.
The photos, which surfaced in March, showed Josh Hartnett alongside a blood-covered Dakota Johnson while filming in New York City. The images spread fast, especially among fans of the Colleen Hoover novel the movie is based on. Showalter described the buzz as a perfect mix of popular elements coming together all at once.

'Verity' Director's Take on Leaked Footage
Speaking at the 2nd December premiere of his holiday film 'Oh. What. Fun.' Michael Showalter said it was wild to watch how quickly the images went viral. He explained that the intense reaction made sense, given the massive fanbase for Colleen Hoover, the popularity of Dakota Johnson, and the shock factor of the bloody scene. Together, those elements created instant online excitement. He added that the response only made him more excited for audiences to see the finished movie.
In the leaked photos, Johnson, who plays struggling writer Lowen, appeared to be filming a scene involving a cyclist accident from the book. Hartnett, portraying Jeremy Crawford, was seen joining her as their characters crossed a street together.

About 'Verity'
'Verity' also stars Anne Hathaway as bestselling thriller author Verity Crawford. The story follows Johnson's character as she lands a rare opportunity to complete a successful book series for the mysterious novelist. Hathaway was also spotted filming scenes in New York earlier this year, including moments where she and Hartnett were seen running through the streets hand in hand.
It was confirmed in late 2024 that Hathaway joined the project not only as a star but also as a producer. She is once again collaborating with Showalter after previously working together on 'The Idea of You,' another film centred on a mother's story.

When asked about the recurring theme of female-led stories in his recent work, Showalter said it wasn't intentional but something he naturally gravitates toward. He explained that he naturally relates to these characters, feels a strong sense of empathy toward them, and is drawn to telling their stories, even though it isn't something he sets out to do intentionally.
'Verity' is set to arrive in theatres on 15th May 2026. 'Oh. What. Fun' is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
