Originally released by Underwood in 2012 as part of her album of the same name, ‘Blown Away’ earned Underwood two Grammy Awards for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance. Clarkson’s cover of the track coincided with the announcement of Underwood’s return to ‘American Idol ‘as a judge, a show that Clarkson won during its inaugural season.
The announcement was made just a week after Clarkson's performance, with Underwood set to join Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie on the judges' panel. The ABC morning show featured a nostalgic video of Underwood’s original audition, taken when she travelled from her hometown of Checotah, Oklahoma, to St. Louis.
Underwood reflected on her journey from an aspiring contestant to becoming a judge, stating, "I remember being at home in our little house and seeing on TV that there were auditions in St. Louis. My mom said, 'If you want to go, I'll drive you.'"
She added, "I went from nobody knowing my name to tens of millions of people watching the show. Underwood’s transition from contestant to judge marks a full-circle moment for the show, highlighting her continued influence and success in the music industry.
