Chris Pratt is taking his latest role to the next level of realism. The 46-year-old actor stars in the upcoming sci-fi thriller 'Mercy,' where he portrays a detective accused of murdering his wife, and spends most of the film physically restrained in a futuristic chair by choice.

Set in a near-future world where artificial intelligence governs the justice system, 'Mercy' explores how AI judges analyse everything from social media posts to surveillance footage to determine guilt or innocence. Pratt's character is placed on trial in this dystopian setup, and for nearly the entire 90-minute runtime, he remains strapped to a high-tech restraint chair.

Chris Pratt Shares on Being Restrained to a Chair

During a panel at New York Comic Con 2025, Chris Pratt explained that he personally requested to be confined in the chair throughout filming. He wanted the experience to feel completely authentic, believing that the physical restriction would help him embody the intense claustrophobia and desperation of his character. The actor insisted on being tightly secured at the wrists, ankles, and even at the head for certain scenes—emphasising that he didn't want to "act" confined, but truly experience it.

Pratt also shared that the sensation of being trapped added genuine emotion and tension to his performance. Instead of learning how to unlock himself, he asked the crew to make sure he couldn't escape during takes, allowing the realism to drive his reactions on camera.

In an interesting detail, Chris Pratt revealed that his character's bare feet during the film were a deliberate nod to the 1988 action classic 'Die Hard,' paying homage to Bruce Willis's iconic role as John McClane.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov and co-starring Kali Reis, 'Mercy' promises a gripping mix of psychological intensity and futuristic commentary on technology and justice. The film is set to hit theatres on 23rd January 2026.

With Pratt's full-body commitment to the role—both mentally and physically—Mercy is shaping up to be one of his most daring and immersive performances yet.
