Why Wolverine Wears The Suit in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’: Explained

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ delivers a fresh dose of fan service and revitalizes the Marvel Cinematic Universe with its well-executed references and nods. The film centres on Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) as he seeks to save his universe from collapsing following the death of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Unable to bring back the original Wolverine, Wade turns to an alternate-reality version of the character, who is known as the "worst Wolverine" in the multiverse. This version of Logan has a troubled past and is struggling with personal challenges and loneliness.

One of the film’s highlights is Hugh Jackman finally donning Wolverine’s iconic yellow suit, a first despite his long history with the character over ten films and twenty-four years. The film provides a poignant explanation for Logan’s choice to wear the suit, tying it to the loss of his original X-Men team. In a touching moment, Logan reveals that he refused to wear the suit during his time with the X-Men because he didn’t want to show how much he cared. After their deaths, he began wearing the suit as a tribute to them and a symbol of his failure.

Despite his past failures, this alternate Wolverine finds redemption alongside Deadpool while battling the villainous Cassandra Nova. His journey not only reignites his heroism but also helps him find a new family on Earth-10005, healing old wounds. Fans who have long awaited Wolverine in his classic suit are now treated to this long-desired visual, reflecting a broader trend in superhero cinema.

Kevin Feige recently explained why the original X-Men movies featured black leather suits instead of comic-accurate costumes. When the franchise started in 2000, superhero films were still considered niche, and studios aimed to make characters look more "cool" to appeal to a wider audience. The X-Men's leather outfits were inspired by the success of ‘The Matrix,’ reflecting the era’s fashion trends rather than comic book accuracy.

As superhero movies have evolved, so have their costumes. The MCU, in particular, has embraced more comic-accurate designs, seen in recent films like ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ This shift reflects a growing acceptance of classic comic looks, with the upcoming DCU reboot also promising designs true to their comic origins. Fans are excited to see beloved heroes in their traditional outfits, a trend that ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’  proudly continues.
