Blair Underwood and Ashton James star as a father and son who are up against tough odds in the new sports drama 'Youngblood.'
Directed by Hubert Davis, the film is a modern reimagining of the 1986 hockey classic that originally starred Rob Lowe, Cynthia Gibb, and Patrick Swayze. James takes on the role of rising hockey star Dean Youngblood, while Underwood plays his father, Blane, offering guidance and tough love as his son chases his dream.
What's in The 'Youngblood' Trailer
In the newly released trailer, Underwood's character urges his son not to let anyone take away everything he has worked so hard for. Later, Dean's coach, played by Shawn Doyle, delivers a powerful message to the team, reminding them that if they lose, it should be against the best, never because they defeated themselves.
James says the new version captures what fans loved about the original while bringing fresh energy to the story. He believes longtime fans and newcomers alike will find something special in the film and hopes audiences experience it on the big screen.
New 'Youngblood' Pays Tribute to The Original
Davis explains that the movie pays tribute to the original while also flipping familiar '80s sports movie tropes. He was especially drawn to exploring themes of masculinity, competition, and identity through the lens of hockey.

The film was co-written by Josh Epstein, Kyle Rideout, Seneca Aaron, and Charles Officer, the filmmaker and former professional hockey player who passed away in 2023 after initially serving as both writer and director on the project. James shared that working with Davis felt like a full-circle moment and said the director led the cast while honouring Officer's legacy.
Davis also praised James for committing to the physical demands of the role. The actor trained on the ice for two years to convincingly portray a skilled hockey player. The director said great care was taken to make the hockey scenes exciting while ensuring the characters remained at the heart of the story.
Alongside Underwood and James, the cast includes Alexandra McDonald, Henri Picard, Emidio Lopes, and many others.

At its heart, Davis says 'Youngblood' is a story about the bond between a father and a son. He praised Underwood's performance, noting that his talent was essential in grounding the film emotionally.
After premiering at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, 'Youngblood', distributed by Well Go USA, is set to hit theatres on 6th March.
