World of Warcraft is reviving its Diablo-themed Greedy Emissary event, but this time with an unexpected twist—actual lore is being tied to the collaboration. As part of the upcoming Patch 11.1.7, titled Legacy of Arathor, this returning event explores a grim alternate version of Azeroth that draws heavy inspiration from the Diablo universe.
Blizzard recently unveiled details about Patch 11.1.7, which will bring a host of updates including a new narrative feature called Lorewalking, another chapter of the ongoing story set in the Arathi Highlands, improved user interface and accessibility features—and a reimagined crossover with Diablo. Unlike its previous iteration, the Greedy Emissary event now comes with a deeper narrative component.
While exploring the Public Test Realm, WoW content creator MrGM came across a new NPC named Baranar, a Hellhunter involved in the event. Baranar’s dialogue, which was shared on social media, reveals that he comes from a horrifying version of Azeroth, where the world was overtaken by plague and hellfire. In this reality, the Light has abandoned its followers in pursuit of what it sees as justice, leading to the rise of terrifying new versions of familiar characters.

In this alternate timeline:
- Fandral Staghelm becomes a heroic figure by mastering the forces of flame.
- Malfurion Stormrage undergoes a horrific transformation into Malfisto, a demonic entity of rot and disease who corrupts Nordrassil and Mount Hyjal from within.
These dark twists clearly echo Diablo’s themes. The corrupted Malfurion, Malfisto, appears to be a nod to Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred from Diablo 4, while the idea of the Light turning its back mirrors how celestial forces often behave in the Diablo universe.
In addition to the new lore, the event also introduces unique rewards. Players can look forward to a recolored version of Tyrael’s Charger, themed after Inarius, and several new tints for revamped Tier 2 armor sets—part of WoW’s 20th anniversary celebration. Specific details on how these rewards can be obtained haven’t been confirmed yet.
Though an official launch date for the event hasn’t been shared, the Public Test Realm currently lists it as active throughout July. If Patch 11.1.7 launches around the expected date of June 17, players can expect a full summer of Diablo-inspired chaos and fresh gameplay content in World of Warcraft.
