World of Warcraft has teased the development of a new horror-themed independent game mode, though details remain scarce. This “scary story” game mode will be integrated into the game client like the Plunderstorm mode but is not expected to follow the same battle royale format.
Plunderstorm, a piratical mode introduced by Blizzard in March 2024 and revisited in January 2025, featured a 60-player battle royale in the Arathi Highlands. What made Plunderstorm stand out was that it functioned as an independent game mode within the World of Warcraft client, separate from players' main characters. Now, Blizzard is working on another standalone mode that will bring an entirely different experience. During PAX East, World of Warcraft’s associate game director, Jeremy Feasel, offered a few details about the upcoming mode, revealing that it will have a horror-themed storyline. However, unlike Plunderstorm, it will not be a battle royale. While no release date has been set, Feasel teased that a full reveal with videos showcasing the game’s features will be coming soon.

The horror-focused game mode will feature Darkshire, a cursed town located within the haunted Duskwood zone. Known for its eerie atmosphere, populated by werewolf-like Worgen, necromancers, cultists, and various dark creatures, Duskwood is a perfect setting for a horror story.
Fans are already speculating about what the game mode could involve. Some believe it could be a deception-based experience similar to Among Us, or perhaps a survival escape game like Dead by Daylight. Others think it may take inspiration from games like Vampire Survivors, especially given past data mining hints.
In addition to this new mode, Feasel confirmed that World of Warcraft players can look forward to World of Warcraft: Legion Remix, which will introduce endless Mythic+ dungeon progression and a new open-world challenge mode called the Shattered Timeline. More details about both updates are expected later this year.
