The Week in Music: News From July 27th to August 2nd

This past week has been witness to a wild assortment of treats from the music world. As per usual, the music gods sprinkled in some surprise releases from the likes of Billie Eilish, Sam Smith and Nicki Minaj.
The news this week has also oscillated between being rather worrying and providing reasons to celebrate. The former arrives in relation to Doja Cat’s recent announcement, where she admitted to being tested positive for coronavirus. And the latter points towards Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner welcoming their first child together. So, as usual, it’s been quite the roller coaster ride, and all you’ve got to do is buckle up and enjoy!

1. Taemin of SHINee recently revealed the first teaser for his upcoming third album, ‘Never Gonna Dance Again’. His comeback will be divided into three parts. And the first prologue single titled, ‘2 Kids’ is set to make its landing on August 4th.
2. BTS is gearing up to drop an all-English single on the 21st of August. They’re also launching their very own reality show, which will give viewers a glimpse of the boys in their element.
3. Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner just welcomed their first child together. Their daughter’s named Willa and it won’t be long before they take to social media to gush about her.
4. In a strange twist of fate, after mocking people’s worries over the coronavirus, Doja Cat tested positive herself. She’s currently on the road to recovery and calmer than ever.
5. Dua Lipa is teaming up with her biggest role models, Missy Elliott and Madonna, for a remixed version of her track, ‘Levitating’. The tune will make its landing on August 14th.
6. This week, Billie Eilish resurfaced with her brand new single, ‘my future’. In this tune, she explores the concept of finding comfort in loneliness and using it as a space to grow and re-discover oneself.
7. Bastille surprised the music world when they surfaced with their new track, ‘What You Gonna Do???’. Adopting a more Punk-Rock approach to this song, it’s concept revolves around the new era of technology that has everyone stuck behind screens and rotting on the inside.
8. Sam Smith arrived on the scene with a brand new single featuring Burna Boy. Titled ‘My Oasis’, this tune is a pop plea for love. With the lyrical melancholy signature of Smith’s style, their return to the scene has been so very wholesome.
9. MTV’s 2020 Video Music Awards nominee list is out. It features some familiar faces leading the charge: Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish and The Weeknd. The list has also witnessed up and coming stars like Roddy Ricch and Megan Thee Stallion, notching a place in some of the biggest categories
10. With the release of Beyonce’s visual album, ‘Black Is King,’ the world witnessed a reclamation of the black narrative through a spectacle of colour and symbolisms.
