Harry Styles, Fans & ‘Watermelon Sugar’; A New Saga
Harry Styles might’ve faced a rude snub from the VMAs this year, but it’s fair to say that Billboard’s Pop Songs chart absolutely adores him. Styles has become the first member of One Direction to earn multiple No. 1s on the chart. The young star claimed the spotlight once more when his groovy tune, ‘Watermelon Sugar’ landed on the No.1 spot.
Styles first reigned supreme when another “Fine Line” hit notched that special spot. ‘Adore You‘ made itself at home on the chart dated April 11. Interestingly, with ‘Adore You’ currently at the No. 5 spot, he joins an impressive league of 25 other acts by holding two songs in the top five simultaneously.
One Direction & Their Chart History
And yet, Harry’s former bandmates still follow closely behind. In fact, with four members of One Direction having topped the Pop Songs chart, the boys have set quite the record. No other group has more than two members with solo No. 1s. So, while we’re on the topic, here are the other gems that made their landing at No. 1.
Liam Payne’s ‘Strip That Down’ feat. Quavo enjoyed a good two weeks at No. 1 in 2017. Niall Horan’s ‘Slow Hands’ had a one week run in the same year. And Zayn Malik’s ‘Pillowtalk’ basked there for two weeks, in 2016. And as a group, One Direction has tallied 13 Pop Songs entries between 2012 and 2016.
Now, circling back to ‘Watermelon Sugar,’ in a comical turn of events, fans created a #WatermelonSugarDay to honour this juicy masterpiece. As August 3rd is National Watermelon Day, fans took this as their cue to celebrate the hit tune. Twitter of course, blew up with fans sharing their favourite moments from the music video and gushing over Harry’s live performances.
And so, ‘Watermelon Sugar’ reclaims the spotlight once again and it looks like this time, fans are calling the shots.
