Madonna’s Biopic ‘Who’s That Girl’ is Back in Development

Madonna's Long-Awaited Biopic ‘Who’s That Girl’ is Back in Development

Madonna’s highly anticipated biopic is back on track. The pop icon has revealed that she is actively rewriting the script for the film, which will now be titled ‘Who’s That Girl,’ a nod to her iconic 1987 album. This marks a significant development in the long-awaited project, signalling a renewed commitment to bringing the legendary singer’s life story to the big screen.

Madonna’s highly awaited biopic has experienced a tumultuous journey. Initially announced several years ago, the project was put on hold in January 2023. The singer had intended to direct the film herself, aiming to prevent her story from being distorted by “misogynistic men.” The decision to pause production coincided with the launch of her highly successful ‘Celebration’ tour in July 2023.

Despite the setback, Universal Pictures confirmed that Madonna remained passionate about the project and that it was merely postponed until scheduling conflicts could be resolved. Notably, Julia Garner, known for her roles in ‘Ozark’ and ‘Inventing Anna,’ was chosen from a competitive pool of actresses to portray Madonna and is still attached to the project.

In a 2022 interview, Madonna provided insights into her upcoming biopic. The pop icon explained her decision to take a more hands-on role in the film’s development, suggesting a desire to maintain creative control over the portrayal of her life story.

“I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film,” she said, adding: “No one’s going to tell my story, but me.”

When asked about the progress of her biopic, Madonna shared details about her involvement.

“I have a very long script that is really hard for me to make shorter. I’ve been whittling away at it, but it’s like hacking off my limbs.”
