Adam Sandler has revealed that 'Happy Gilmore 2' film underwent major rewrites following the passing of Carl Weathers, who played the iconic role of Derick “Chubbs” Peterson in the original 1996 film. The beloved actor and former NFL player died in 2024 at the age of 76.
In a recent interview with Collider, Adam Sandler shared that Weathers had been set to return in a significant role for the upcoming sequel. The storyline originally featured Chubbs prominently, but after Weathers’ passing, the script had to be restructured. Sandler described the loss as painful and said the production had to make substantial changes not only to specific scenes but also to the core story. He noted that the final version includes heartfelt tributes and meaningful references to Chubbs, honouring the character’s legacy and Weathers’ contribution to the franchise.

Early drafts of the film reportedly gave Chubbs a more active presence, including a subplot involving his son. In that version, Chubbs appeared frequently in Happy’s dreams, and his son held a grudge against Happy, blaming him for his father’s death. That arc has since been reworked to fit the updated storyline.
Carl Weathers first played the character Chubbs, a retired professional golfer whose promising career was cut short when an alligator bit off his hand. The character, who wore a wooden prosthetic, became one of the most memorable parts of the original 'Happy Gilmore', known for his mentorship and humour.
