Taylor Russell has stepped away from the upcoming remake of the film 'The Thomas Crown Affair', marking a major shift in the film's casting just as production ramps up. Russell was set to play the female lead opposite Michael B. Jordan, who is both starring in and directing the high-profile project. However, due to reported creative differences, Russell has exited the film, and her role will now be recast.

Amazon MGM is putting a fresh spin on the classic romantic heist tale with a modern take on 'The Thomas Crown Affair'. In the original 1968 version, Faye Dunaway played an insurance investigator who becomes entangled with a wealthy businessman suspected of masterminding a daring bank robbery. The story was revived in 1999 with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, this time revolving around the theft of a priceless Monet painting from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Taylor Russell, known for her critically acclaimed performances in 'Bones and All', 'Lost in Space', 'Escape Room', and 'Waves', had been tapped to bring a fresh edge to the female lead role. While she’s no longer involved with 'Thomas Crown', she is set to appear in Na Hong-jin’s upcoming sci-fi thriller 'Hope'.

Update on 'The Thomas Crown Affair'

Despite the casting shakeup, the film remains on track, with production currently underway in London. 'The Thomas Crown Affair' is scheduled for theatrical release on 5th March, 2027. The film features a star-studded ensemble, including Kenneth Branagh ('A Haunting in Venice'), Lily Gladstone ('Killers of the Flower Moon'), Danai Gurira ('Black Panther'), Pilou Asbæk ('Game of Thrones'), and Aiysha Hart ('Atlantis').

The screenplay is penned by Drew Pearce, known for 'The Fall Guy' and 'Iron Man 3'. This project marks Michael B. Jordan’s second time in the director’s chair, following the box office success of 'Creed III' in 2023.

Jordan has previously credited his directorial inspiration to Denzel Washington, who directed him in 'A Journal for Jordan'. He described the experience as transformative, having learned about character development and precision in performance and filmmaking. That mentorship has helped shape his vision as a filmmaker, one he now brings to this ambitious remake.

With a mix of high-calibre talent and bold reimagining, 'The Thomas Crown Affair' continues to build anticipation despite a notable change in the cast.
