Seyfried Shares Where the Project Stands

Despite the fact that nothing has formally begun rolling cameras, Seyfried's updates provide sincere hope. She told Collider that she's "100 percent hopeful" about a third 'Mamma Mia!' film developing, adding that the series' timeless appeal—complete with upbeat musical numbers—gives her confidence that it will eventually make a comeback.

While jokingly pointing to an eyebrow-raising target like 2038 for a release date, she also promised fans that 'Mamma Mia! 3' is "happening" and hinted that movie would be set in Greece (or possibly beyond). Crucially, she explained that "Producer Judy Craymer is always working on it," but availability and studio priorities—like the release schedule for 'Wicked 2'—have slowed the process.

Cast Enthusiasm Keeps the Momentum Alive

Members of the cast are still expressing a strong desire to return. According to Christine Baranski, Judy Craymer has already presented her with a storyline for 'Mamma Mia! 3,' and she anticipates the group getting back together "on some gorgeous Greek or Croatian island." Amanda Seyfried echoes that positive attitude while remaining forthright: "I dare you to show me one individual who doesn't want a third Mamma Mia!" However, there are still practical obstacles to overcome, such as negotiating cast compensation; she joked that it may ultimately depend on "whether or if Universal wants to pay the money."

A recent Vanity Fair story adds to the optimistic mood by revealing that the sequel is currently under development. The original cast, including Meryl Streep, who is open to returning even in a creative reincarnation, are on board, the script is finished, and producer Judy Craymer is making progress. There's even talk of casting Sabrina Carpenter as Sophie's daughter—a charming twist that could enrich the story's generational thread.
