During a live presentation with Kerry Washington at the 2025 Golden Globes, Andrew Garfield unexpectedly went viral on the internet by wearing 'glasses.' Cameras caught the event, and people praised his confident manner and stylish attire as it swiftly went viral. But in a recent interview, Garfield disclosed that the situation’s actuality differed greatly from what the general public believed.
Garfield, recently sat down with MTV's Josh Horowitz to explain the real story behind that viral 'glasses' moment and gave fans a glimpse into what he was really experiencing on stage.

The actor disclosed that the 'glasses' moment was a quick response to a challenging circumstance, defying the widely held belief that it was a chic and elegant gesture. Garfield became somewhat anxious during the live presentation when he discovered he was unable to read the teleprompter correctly.
"Oh f---. I can't actually see the teleprompter," he recalled thinking in the interview. He quickly found his glasses, which were fortunately in his right hand, and put them on to help stabilize his eyesight. His clothing, which included a partially unbuttoned shirt and a slicked-back haircut, further contributed to his unease by making him feel vulnerable and uncomfortable.

He called the entire experience as "unbridled terror," acknowledging that there was a great deal of anxious energy and self-consciousness hidden beneath the serene facade that others witnessed. It was a genuine, understandable human response to pressure rather than a staged event.
Fans' Reactions and the Viral Sensation
The response to Garfield's 'glasses' moment on the internet was overwhelmingly positive. The short video became a cultural event as fans flooded Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter (now X) with fan art, memes, and fervent appreciation. Many others expressed how the incident struck a personal chord with them, particularly in LGBTQ+ communities, who applauded Garfield's candor and sincerity, even if it was inadvertent. Posts varied from witty commentary to sincere praise.
For instance, one user said, "People who say there is no monoculture anymore have never experienced being gay and online when Andrew Garfield does something as important as put on his glasses." Another commented with a playful exaggeration, "BREAKING NEWS: Andrew Garfield in his reading glasses just received a 55-minute standing ovation from me in my bedroom."

Garfield himself was amused and confused at the same time by the responses, but he made it obvious that the moment was not planned or an attempt to impress, but rather his attempt to get through a difficult live TV moment.
Focused on Acting and Upcoming Projects
While the viral moment certainly brought renewed attention to Garfield, the actor is currently focused on his craft and upcoming projects. His most recent movie, 'After the Hunt,' is scheduled for its release on 10th October, and has already received positive reviews from critics for its gripping narrative and Garfield's subtle acting.

A far cry from the tense atmosphere of the Golden Globes stage, the movie promises to highlight a different side of the actor. Garfield emphasizes that although humorous and relatable, incidents like the glasses incident don't define him, and he remains grounded and dedicated to his job despite his new viral stardom. Rather, he hopes to keep developing as an actor and narrating stories that have an impact on viewers everywhere.
