Arnold Schwarzenegger recently revealed that his most financially rewarding film wasn’t one of his action blockbusters like ‘The Terminator’, but rather the 1988 comedy ‘Twins’. During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the actor said that while he and co-star Danny DeVito didn’t take upfront salaries for the film, they negotiated a share of the profits instead.
He confirmed that the deal paid off handsomely. “It was fantastic,” he told Cohen, adding that they “went all the way to the bank with that one.” Although he declined to reveal the exact figure, Schwarzenegger confirmed that he earned more than $40 million from the backend profits, making it the highest payout of his career.
‘Twins’, directed by Ivan Reitman, followed Schwarzenegger’s character—a genetically-engineered, physically perfect man—on a journey to find his long-lost twin brother, played by DeVito. The comedy proved to be a major hit, grossing over $200 million worldwide on a modest budget.

The Unmade Sequel and a Gamble That Paid Off
When asked about a potential sequel, Schwarzenegger said that a follow-up titled ‘Triplets’ had been planned, with Eddie Murphy joining the cast. However, he noted that the project was shelved following the death of director Ivan Reitman, who passed away shortly before filming was set to begin.
Schwarzenegger has spoken in the past about taking a chance on ‘Twins’ to show Hollywood he could succeed outside the action genre. That gamble clearly paid off, securing him one of the most profitable backend deals in film history.
