Benedict Cumberbatch is raising concerns about Hollywood's ongoing sustainability issues, highlighting the film industry's excessive waste—particularly around food and energy. In a recent appearance on the 'Ruthie’s Table 4' podcast, the 'Doctor Strange' star reflected on his personal experiences with overconsumption while working on major studio productions.

During the discussion, Benedict Cumberbatch shared that while he appreciates the physical discipline required for transformative roles, the process often involves eating far beyond what the body truly needs. Preparing for his Marvel role required a high-calorie diet—sometimes five full meals a day—along with snacks like crackers, cheese, almonds, and boiled eggs. Though the outcome was increased strength and stamina on set, he admitted the regimen felt excessive and unsustainable, especially when viewed through the lens of global food insecurity.

The British actor expressed discomfort at the sheer volume of food consumed just for the sake of a role, noting that the same amount could easily nourish a family in need. This realisation sparked a broader reflection on Hollywood’s environmental footprint.

Cumberbatch emphasised that the problem goes beyond food waste. He called out the widespread lack of recycling on sets, the excessive use of lighting equipment that consumes significant energy, and the unsustainable approaches to transportation and temporary housing during productions. He pointed to these systemic issues as contributing to the entertainment industry's reputation as a "grossly wasteful" business.

Acknowledging the criticism actors often face when speaking out on climate-related topics, Benedict Cumberbatch admitted that advocating for change in such a resource-heavy industry can be challenging. Still, he remains committed to pushing for greener practices, both as an actor and a producer.

On set, Benedict Cumberbatch makes efforts to encourage sustainability, often initiating discussions about eliminating single-use plastics and opting for more eco-friendly alternatives. He believes the industry can evolve and that small changes—like switching from plastic bottles to reusable or glass options—can make a significant difference, especially when filming in urban or accessible locations.

Through his candid reflections, Cumberbatch continues to shed light on the urgent need for greater environmental responsibility in the film and television world.
