Billy Idol recently revealed that he unknowingly fathered a son during his 1985 ‘Rebel Yell’ tour. The surprising discovery came to light in his new documentary, Billy Idol Should Be Dead, which premiered earlier this month at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The revelation began when Idol’s daughter, Bonnie, received a DNA test as a gift from her husband. Speaking in the documentary, she recalled how the results unexpectedly indicated the presence of another sibling. According to her, the app identified a man named Brant who had noted his origins as “New York, 1985” and was actively searching for his biological father. This prompted confusion and shock, as Bonnie and her half-brother Willem realised they had a previously unknown sibling.

Idol, now 68, acknowledged the discovery, stating that he had fathered Brant during the ‘Rebel Yell’ tour without ever being aware of it. Brant, who also appears in the film, shared that he had long believed someone else was his biological father—until a 23andMe test revealed otherwise. When he confronted his mother, she reportedly admitted that she had once spent a weekend with Idol during a brief breakup.

The documentary not only explores this personal chapter of Idol’s life, but also takes a deep dive into his music career, from his punk roots in Generation X to his global solo success with hits like ‘White Wedding’.

Billy Idol Returns With New Album

In other news, Billy Idol recently addressed the punk movement’s early use of the swastika, characterising it as a form of “performance art” meant to provoke rather than promote ideology. On the music front, he returned this year with ‘Dream Into It’, his first studio album in over ten years. The album includes the track ‘77’, a collaboration with Avril Lavigne, which the pair brought to the stage during a live performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live in April.

‘Billy Idol Should Be Dead’ is currently making the rounds at film festivals, giving fans an intimate glimpse into the punk legend’s turbulent life and career, both behind the scenes and in the spotlight.
