Bono has spoken about his relationship with his son, Inhaler frontman Elijah Hewson, sharing that the young musician doesn’t seem to be concerned about having a famous parent.
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the U2 singer reflected on a moment when he discovered that one of his children had gone camping in Joshua Tree National Park without informing him. Bono explained that it was his youngest son, John, who had made the trip, and described him as the wisest of his children. He added that John brushed off the significance of the park's connection to U2’s 1987 album ‘The Joshua Tree’.
He then turned his attention to Elijah, praising his band Inhaler and noting how unfazed his son was by his own celebrity status. He remarked that Elijah didn’t seem interested in his father’s fame and maintained a cool and casual attitude about it. The singer also reflected on how their bond differed from the one he shared with his own father, suggesting that Elijah had no problem with him being a well-known musician.
Referencing Inhaler’s latest album ‘Open Wide’, Bono brought up the song ‘All I Got Is You’ and mentioned that it reminded him of U2’s ‘All I Want Is You’. He said he had pointed out the similarity to Elijah and lightly warned him about comparisons between their bands, especially given Inhaler’s musical range. According to Bono, Elijah dismissed the concern without hesitation.

The U2 frontman jokingly noted that he always told his children they were free to ignore any advice he offered—and, in his words, they have.
Bono’s interview came in the lead-up to the release of his new film, ‘Bono: Stories Of Surrender’, which reportedly received a lengthy standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.
Earlier this year, Elijah discussed his own perspective on growing up with a famous father. He said that while he valued his dad’s advice, he actually wished he received more of it. The most helpful guidance, he recalled, was being told to stay present and give everything to the moment.
He also addressed public assumptions that Inhaler would benefit unfairly from his father’s legacy. While acknowledging that there had been some advantages, Elijah said that these perceptions motivated the band to work harder to prove their worth and avoid the image of coasting on connections.

Back in 2023, the band admitted that U2 guitarist The Edge sometimes influenced their sound—something they said they had to be cautious about. Still, they referred to him as a hugely important figure.
In a later interview, Elijah shared that Bono wasn’t initially as enthusiastic about Inhaler as he had expected. Like most parents, Bono had hoped his son would go to college. Over time, however, he and the other parents came to recognize the band’s potential and have since become supportive of their musical path.
U2’s Upcoming Album
Meanwhile, Bono recently gave an update on U2’s upcoming, currently untitled album—the follow-up to 2017’s ‘Songs Of Experience’. Inhaler have also announced their largest UK headline shows yet, with performances scheduled in London and Liverpool.
