An unfinished final project from the visionary mind of David Lynch might finally see the light of day, not on screens, but on pages, as a book that brings his last story to life. One of Lynch’s longtime collaborators has revealed that the script for the late director’s mysterious Netflix project, 'Unrecorded Night', may be published posthumously.
Renowned for surreal masterpieces like 'Twin Peaks', 'The Elephant Man', and 'Mulholland Drive', David Lynch passed away at the age of 78 in January 2025 at his daughter’s home in Los Angeles, following evacuation due to the city’s devastating wildfires. Following his death, fans and collaborators began reflecting on his final works, including the ambitious script he had been developing with Netflix.

First teased by Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos in a heartfelt tribute, the script has since been hailed by longtime Lynch collaborator Sabrina Sutherland as one of his most remarkable and visionary works yet. Now, further details have emerged from cinematographer Peter Deming, who worked closely with Lynch on 'Lost Highway', 'Twin Peaks: The Return', and 'Mulholland Drive'.
What is 'Unrecorded Night' About?
According to Deming, the 'Unrecorded Night' script was a sprawling piece of work, much like Lynch's final season of 'Twin Peaks'. The screenplay spanned nearly 600 pages, so extensive that Deming had to read it in multiple sessions. He recalled that the project had entered pre-production stages before the COVID-19 pandemic halted its progress. David Lynch had even begun scouting locations, working with a production designer, and speaking to longtime collaborators Laura Dern and Naomi Watts about potential roles.

Although the production never resumed, there is hope that the script won’t remain unseen. Deming shared that Lynch’s daughter, filmmaker Jennifer Lynch, along with his family, has recently discussed the idea of publishing 'Unrecorded Night' as a book. These conversations reportedly began when Lynch’s health declined, prompting concerns over whether he would be able to complete the project on screen.
This news follows the recent auction of rare items from David Lynch’s collection, which brought in more than $4.25 million. As Lynch’s influence on modern cinema continues to be celebrated, the possible release of 'Unrecorded Night' as a book would offer fans one final journey into the mind of one of Hollywood’s most enigmatic storytellers.
