Disney is continuing its trend of reimagining classic villains by developing a live-action movie centred on Gaston from 'Beauty and the Beast.' Following films like 'Maleficent' and 'Cruella,' the studio is now turning the spotlight on one of its most memorable animated antagonists. The project is still in early development, and no director has been announced yet.
Update on Gaston-Based Movie
The screenplay is currently being written by Dave Callaham, known for his work on 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' and the upcoming 'Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.' An earlier version of the script was developed by Kate Herron and Briony Redman, who previously worked together on an episode of 'Doctor Who.'

Producing the film is Michelle Rejwan, who has been involved with several recent Disney and Lucasfilm projects, including 'Obi-Wan Kenobi,' 'Willow,' and 'Andor.' The movie is described as having a swashbuckling, action-driven tone. Luke Evans, who played Gaston in the 2017 live-action 'Beauty and the Beast,' is not expected to return for this new version.
About Gaston
Gaston was not part of the original French fairy tale that inspired 'Beauty and the Beast.' Instead, he was created specifically for Disney's 1991 animated film by screenwriter Linda Woolverton. Unlike earlier Disney villains who were often creepy or terrifying, Gaston was designed as an exaggerated symbol of brute masculinity. Animator Andreas Deja gave him his signature square jaw and muscular build.

In the animated film, Gaston is a boastful hunter and local bully who believes his strength comes from eating dozens of eggs every day. He relentlessly pursues Belle, only to grow enraged when she falls in love with the Beast. His obsession ultimately leads him to rally the townspeople into an attack on the Beast's castle, where he meets his end during a final confrontation. The character was originally voiced by Broadway performer Richard White and later portrayed by Luke Evans in the 2017 remake.
This is not Disney's first attempt to expand Gaston's story. A Disney+ series titled 'Little Town' was once in development and would have featured Luke Evans alongside Josh Gad as LeFou. However, the project was delayed and eventually cancelled before production began.
For now, Disney's live-action Gaston movie remains in development, with more details expected to emerge as the project moves forward.
