Comedy legend and film star Eddie Murphy is turning the spotlight on himself in a way he rarely has done before. Murphy is starring in the upcoming Netflix documentary 'Being Eddie,' which will give an intimate look at his meteoric rise from teenage stand‑up phenom and cast member of Saturday Night Live to global movie star, as he nears his 50th year in the show business.

In a wide‑ranging interview with People, he touches on everything from the legacy of his early hits like 'Beverly Hills Cop' and 'The Nutty Professor,' to his role as father of ten and how self‑love and resilience helped him stay grounded in an often unforgiving industry.

From Brooklyn Kid to Hollywood Icon: The First 30 Years

Eddie Murphy first became a household name when he joined 'Saturday Night Live' in the early 1980s, dazzling audiences with his impersonations and charisma. His big-screen debut was followed by box office successes like '48 Hours,' 'Trading Places,' and 'Beverly Hills Cop,' which paved the way for his dominant career. Through the 1990s and into the 2000s he expanded his palette with starring roles in films like 'The Nutty Professor,' where he played multiple characters, as well as voicing Donkey in the hit animated franchise 'Shrek.'

The Documentary, Personal Life & Staying Grounded

Taking viewers into his Los Angeles home, Murphy opens himself like never before in 'Being Eddie.' He talks about his early tragedy (his father was murdered when he was young) and how, despite his stardom, his greatest gift is still his self-love: "My most important blessing is that I love myself," he says. The film also explores his mental‑health journey: he admits to childhood obsessive‑compulsive tendencies (checking the gas stove repeatedly) which he now channels into comedic precision.

Murphy says that reaching this point "with my sanity and spirit intact" is his biggest accomplishment, not accolades or box office records. When it comes to his personal life, his family is everything. As a father of ten children, he refers to them as "the centre of everything." The documentary brings in commentary from celebrity friends and colleagues as well, spotlighting both his career highs and some of his missteps (he acknowledges projects like 'The Adventures of Pluto Nash' weren't hits).

'Being Eddie' had its premiere on Netflix on 12th November, offering an intimate look at how Murphy has reinvented himself and stayed relevant across generations.

Hits, Stumbles & The Next Chapter

Eddie Murphy's filmography is filled with iconic hits that solidified his legacy over his 50-year career, including 'Beverly Hills Cop,' 'Coming to America,' 'The Nutty Professor,' and 'Shrek.' However, he has been open about the highs and lows: he admits that the entertainment business has changed significantly since his early days and that some of his films didn't do as well as he had hoped. As he nears the official 50-year milestone in show business in 2026, the documentary marks the beginning of a new chapter.
