Emma Stone carefully planned how she would unveil her bold, shaved-head transformation for 'Bugonia'—and her patience paid off.

In an exclusive interview, the Oscar-winning actress revealed that she intentionally kept her striking new look under wraps to preserve a sense of surprise for fans. Playing powerful pharmaceutical CEO Michelle Fuller in 'Bugonia,' her fourth collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos, Stone explained that she wanted audiences to experience the reveal organically rather than through leaked photos or early press.

She admitted that keeping the secret wasn't easy, as she spent nearly three months wearing beanies in public to hide her freshly shaved head. However, she felt the effort was worthwhile, noting that one of her favourite parts about 'Poor Things' was how audiences had no idea what her character looked like until the trailer premiered. That element of mystery, she said, made the reveal even more enjoyable.

Emma Stone on Keeping The Secret for Long

Since there were no set leaks or behind-the-scenes images during filming, Emma Stone decided to maintain the secrecy a bit longer. Once shooting wrapped, she grew fond of her new look, though it took some adjustment to embrace the drastic change.

Director Yorgos Lanthimos shared that Emma Stone had a moment of hesitation on the day of the big scene, which had to be captured in one single take using the challenging VistaVision camera setup. The pressure of getting it right added to her nerves, but the emotional weight of the transformation ultimately made it one of the most memorable experiences of her career.

Emma Stone's Motivation For Going Bald

Reflecting on the moment, Stone drew strength from her mother Krista's battle with triple-negative breast cancer in 2008, which had caused her to lose her hair during treatment. Remembering her mother's resilience helped her feel grounded and reminded her that hair is temporary and symbolic of growth and renewal.

Emma Stone later described the transformation as liberating, saying it became one of the most empowering experiences of her life. Although she never publicly debuted the shaved look—instead wearing wigs for events like the 'A Real Pain' premiere at the 62nd New York Film Festival—she later showcased her natural regrowth with a chic pixie cut at the 2025 Golden Globes.

'Bugonia' is set for wide release on 31st October, with audiences eager to see Emma Stone's fearless new look and performance in what promises to be another visually stunning and emotionally layered film from Yorgos Lanthimos.
