Sony Pictures has unveiled the first pictures and all the information on the upcoming 'Anaconda' remake, which stars Paul Rudd and Jack Black, bringing the jungle back to our theaters this Christmas. This version takes a self-aware, meta-twist on the 1997 classic: two middle-aged pals, Doug and Griff (played by Black and Rudd), plan to duplicate their favourite movie as teenagers, Anaconda, only to encounter a genuine, enormous snake in the Amazon.

The remake, which will be released on 25th December, will feature humorous horror, star power, and references to the original.

The Cast, Creators & What to Expect

Tom Gormican (of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), who co-wrote the screenplay with Kevin Etten, will be directing, the upcoming 'Anaconda.' The humorous team of Jack Black (as Doug McCallister) and Paul Rudd (as background actor Griff) share the screen in what they refer to be a "brilliant meta" scenario, playing the principal parts. Among others who stand behind them are Steve Zahn, Ione Skye, Daniela Melchior, Thandiwe Newton, and Selton Mello.

According to the official synopsis, what begins as a lighthearted, nostalgic filmmaking adventure abruptly becomes deadly as true horror seeps in: the stakes are high, the set is anything but safe, and the snake is real. Black points out that, there's more laughs than the original but insists the film has its frightening moments; Rudd loves the meta energy in the script.

What Does the Images Signify?

Only a few sequences from the impending remake—the sixth Anaconda film overall, including the 2015 crossover 'Lake Placid vs. Anaconda,' and the three sequels to the original film—are shown in these pictures. The stills do, however, provide some crucial context for understanding the tone of the film. As the scene appears more purposefully silly than truly tragic and frightening, the lone shot of Jack Black with the wild boar highlights the film's humorous tone. Nonetheless, it appears very possible that the film will still have realistic stakes.

The two other images imply that the protagonists will be in actual danger, and there might be scenes that replicate the intensity of the original action-adventure film, even as Anaconda adopts a humorous meta approach to the subject matter. It remains to be seen if humorous relief will quickly undermine these moments.

Original 'Anaconda' Legacy & How This Reboot Differs

Starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Owen Wilson, and others, Luis Llosa's 1997 monster thriller 'Anaconda' tells the story of a documentary film crew in the Amazon who fall victim to a huge and deadly snake. Over the years, it produced other spin-offs and sequels and made over US$136 million globally.

The new 'Anaconda' is a meta-take that reflects on the original and uses it as a springboard for comedy, horror, and nostalgia, rather than a straight remake or sequel. This time, two friends decide to produce the video instead of a film team being abducted, but they are ill-prepared for what nature—and enormous snakes—really have in store.
