Freddie Prinze Jr. is thrilled to step back into the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' franchise, teaming up once again with his longtime co-star, Jennifer Love Hewitt. Now 49, Prinze reprises his role as Ray Bronson in the upcoming sequel directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, while Hewitt returns as Julie James—this time portrayed as a trauma professor.

The new instalment marks a full-circle moment for the pair, who originally starred in the 1997 slasher hit alongside Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar, Prinze's real-life wife. Reflecting on the reunion, Prinze described the experience as something akin to a high school reunion, filled with anticipation, familiarity, and the desire to show growth as actors. He noted how there was a strong desire to prove how far both he and Hewitt had come in their craft since the original film.

Due to the intense filming schedule, the actors relied heavily on mutual trust. Freddie Prinze Jr. emphasised that he never doubted Hewitt’s commitment to her character, highlighting how deeply she has always cared about Julie James. That trust, he believes, helped them deliver their strongest performances to date.

Freddie Prinze Jr. Shares His Return to The Sequel

Prinze considers their scenes in the new film to be the most compelling they’ve ever done together across the trilogy. He pointed out that even though another sequel was made in 2006 without their involvement, this latest chapter showcases their best collaborative work on screen.

Hewitt also found the reunion powerful and emotional. She likened the experience to reconnecting with someone she hadn’t seen in years, full of excitement and nervous energy. Despite the long gap, slipping back into their characters happened almost instantly, and she praised Prinze’s performance as a highlight of the movie.

Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson described the experience of working with the original leads as surreal, even calling it out-of-body. She also praised their presence and chemistry, noting the energy they brought to the set and the screen.

What is The Sequel About?

The new IKWYDLS sequel introduces a fresh cast of characters played by Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, and others. The story centres on a group of young adults who, after causing a deadly car accident in Southport, North Carolina, are haunted by a mysterious figure in a fisherman’s slicker a year later. As the threat grows, they seek help from Julie and Ray, who survived the original events back in 1997.

Prinze emphasised that his return is far from a cameo. His character is deeply embedded in the plot, and he credited both Robinson and co-writer Sam Lansky for thoughtfully developing the arcs of Ray and Julie. He believes longtime fans will be satisfied with the depth and direction of these iconic characters.

One nostalgic moment teased in the trailer is Hewitt’s famous line, “What are you waiting for?”—a scene she was excited, though slightly nervous, to revisit. She revealed that reimagining how to deliver it after all these years was a challenge, but ultimately one of the most rewarding parts of returning to the role.

'I Know What You Did Last Summer' hits theatres on 18th July.
