Johnny Depp made a striking appearance at the London premiere of his new film, 'Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness', marking his long-awaited return to the director’s chair after more than 20 years. The red carpet event took place recently at The Curzon Mayfair, where Depp arrived dressed in a classic all-black suit, complete with his signature sunglasses and scarf.
'Modi' is Depp’s first directorial effort since 1997’s 'The Brave', which starred Marlon Brando. The new film, based on Dennis McIntyre’s play, tells the story of Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani during a turbulent period in 1916 Paris. Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio leads the cast as Modigliani, joined by Oscar-winner Al Pacino, who portrays art collector Maurice Gangnat.

What Does 'Modi' Offer?
Set against the gritty backdrop of World War I-era Paris, the film dives deep into the struggles of a misunderstood artist at odds with the world around him. A trailer released in late 2024 teased the internal conflict faced by Modigliani, particularly when challenged by Gangnat, who questions whether talent alone makes someone a true artist.
The film also stars Stephen Graham and Antonia Desplat and follows three intense days as Modigliani finds himself fleeing from police, questioning his career, and contemplating leaving the city behind. According to Depp’s production company, IN.2 Film, the plot explores a chaotic chain of events through the bohemian underbelly of Paris, culminating in a potential turning point when Modigliani meets a collector who could change everything.

Filming Experience For Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp has described the filmmaking experience as one of the most rewarding and transformative periods of his career. He shared heartfelt thanks to the cast, crew, and producers for their creativity and strong commitment. Johnny Depp also gave a heartfelt acknowledgement to longtime friend Al Pacino, who had urged him to take on the project. Referring to the veteran actor’s influence, Depp noted there was no way he could turn down a personal request from Pacino, praising his contribution to the film’s success.
Pacino, in return, praised Depp’s unique directorial approach and creative energy, describing their time on set as enjoyable and unpredictable. He noted that working with Depp brought a sense of playfulness and spontaneity to the project.

During an earlier press event at the San Sebastián Film Festival, Depp reflected on the parallels between his life and Modigliani’s story. Without directly naming his highly publicised defamation trial, he touched on how personal struggles, public scrutiny, and resilience informed his connection to the role and direction of the film. He suggested that everyone goes through difficult experiences, though some—like his—unfold under the public eye.
'Modi' features additional performances by Ryan McParland, Bruno Gouery, and Luisa Ranieri. The film premiered at both the San Sebastián and Rome Film Festivals and is set for a theatrical release in 2025.
Johnny Depp’s next project is a drama called 'Day Drinker', where he stars with Penélope Cruz and 'Outer Banks' actress Madelyn Cline.
