The weekend, which dates from 31st October to 2nd November, will long be remembered in Hollywood as a box‑office disaster: the worst Halloween frame in more than three decades. With an estimated $8.1 million, the love drama 'Regretting You,' which was based on Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, managed to push past the horror sequel 'Black Phone 2,' which earned about $8.0 million, to the top of the domestic chart during this downturn. However, when compared to the entire weekend receipts, which came to about $49.8 million, the lowest sum since the early 1990s, the accomplishment is cold comfort.

A Rough Night for the Big Screen

The numbers don't lie: studios and theaters are facing one of the bleakest Halloween weekends in memory. Although one might anticipate that horror releases would be the most popular during this time of year, the fact that the holiday fell on a Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Toronto Blue Jays World Series finale diverted attention, and a lack of fresh tent‑pole films converged into a perfect storm of underperformance.

According to analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore, this weekend was "a truly scary weekend for the industry"—and for good reason. Despite taking the no.1 spot, Regretting You's weekend was far from impressive. With $8.1 million coming from about 3,425 theatres, it stood as the lowest‑earning number one film of the year so far.

What the Film Is & What's Ahead

Starring Allison Williams as Morgan Grant and Mckenna Grace as her daughter Clara, the film 'Regretting You' was directed by Josh Boone based on a screenplay written by Susan McMartin. After a horrific tragedy uncovers long-buried betrayals, the plot revolves around a mother and daughter dealing with painful secrets and loss. The movie debuted on 24th October in the United States. Despite a low start, the film's worldwide receipts increased to almost $50.8 million by the end of its second weekend, giving some confidence that it could recover its production expenses despite the domestic downturn.

Looking ahead, analysts believe that the next few weeks will be critical. With no major releases this window, 'Regretting You' could hold on to decent legs if word‑of‑mouth improves—but given the industry‑wide malaise, hope is tempered. To regain momentum at the box office, studios will now look forward to upcoming films like 'Zootopia 2' or 'Predator: Badlands.'
