James Cameron is clearing up long-running talk about Matt Damon and the lead role in 'Avatar.'
The director says Matt Damon was never officially offered the role of Jake Sully in the original 2009 film. While the two did discuss the possibility of working together, Cameron explained that the conversation never moved beyond early talks. There was no formal offer, no deal, and no discussion about the character itself.

James Cameron Clears The Talk
Matt Damon previously said he had been offered a percentage of the film's profits but turned it down because of a scheduling conflict with a 'Jason Bourne' movie. James Cameron now says the situation was simply about availability. Damon was already committed to another project, and because of that conflict, the idea of his joining 'Avatar' never progressed.
James Cameron added that even if a profit-sharing deal had been required to bring Damon on board, it would not have happened. Still, he spoke positively about Damon's professionalism, noting that the actor personally reached out to explain why he couldn't pursue the project rather than leaving it to agents.

The role of Jake Sully ultimately went to Sam Worthington, who continues to lead the franchise. Channing Tatum was also considered at one point, but Worthington became the face of the series and returns again in the upcoming third film, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash.'
'Avatar: Fire and Ash' is set to arrive in theatres on 19th December.
