Jennifer Lopez has captivated audiences in the new film adaptation of 'Kiss of the Spider Woman,' proving her musical theatre skills on the big screen. In the movie, she plays classic Hollywood star Ingrid Luna, as well as Luna's alter egos, fashion magnate Aurora and the iconic Spider Woman, delivering a performance that combines singing, dancing, and acting in long, uninterrupted musical sequences.

Jennifer Lopez is Not Planning a Broadway Debut

Despite her evident theatre chops, Jennifer Lopez is not currently planning a Broadway debut. While she has long fantasised about performing on stage, her career has been dominated by music and film, leaving little opportunity to commit to the demanding schedule of eight shows a week. She acknowledges that taking on a Broadway role would be a significant time commitment, requiring her to slow down and focus on a single project.

Lopez's training in dance and performance began in childhood, covering jazz, ballet, and Broadway-style movement before transitioning to hip-hop and street dance as a teenager growing up in the Bronx. 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' allowed her to return to those foundational skills, refreshing her early training while integrating her unique musical and dance style developed over the years as a global superstar.

Director Bill Condon challenged Jennifer Lopez to perform entire musical numbers without edits, a test she met with precision and energy, showcasing her versatility and discipline. This marks her first major cinematic musical, though she has been theatre adjacent for years, portraying Tejano icon Selena and performing in personal projects like 'This Is Me…Now.'

Jennifer Lopez has also maintained an interest in live theatre projects, including a previously planned live TV adaptation of 'Bye Bye Birdie,' which she hoped to play Rosie in. Although that project never came to fruition, she remains open to future opportunities on Broadway when timing and circumstances align.

'Kiss of the Spider Woman,' also starring Tonatiuh and Diego Luna, is now in theatres, offering Jennifer Lopez a platform to demonstrate her musical theatre talents to a new generation of audiences.
