Tessa Thompson delighted audiences at the BFI London Film Festival during a lively screen talk, where she reflected on her diverse career spanning from Marvel blockbusters to intimate indie films. The acclaimed actress, who has played everything from the fierce Valkyrie in 'Thor' to complex dramatic leads, discussed her latest role in 'Hedda,' which premiered at the festival.

Thompson spoke fondly of her experience on the 'Thor' films, describing the set as a playground of imagination led by director Taika Waititi. She humorously compared Waititi's creative energy to that of an overgrown child, noting that his uninhibited, playful approach keeps the filmmaking process unpredictable and fun.

Tessa Thompson's Warm Words for Chris Hemsworth

Equally, Thompson had warm words for her longtime Marvel co-star Chris Hemsworth, whom she affectionately described as a big kid with impressive muscles and a fearless sense of humour. She explained that Hemsworth brings a sense of openness and spontaneity to every scene, constantly seeking new ways to entertain and connect with his fellow cast members.

Tessa Thompson admitted that making superhero movies can often feel "goofy," requiring actors to tap into a sense of childlike imagination. Taking on the role of Valkyrie was partly a personal challenge for her—she wanted to see if she could fully embrace that level of play and fantasy. The experience, she said, proved liberating and creatively rewarding.

Tessa Thompson's 'Hedda'

The conversation turned to her newest project, 'Hedda,' a modern reimagining of Henrik Ibsen's 'Hedda Gabler,' directed by Nia DaCosta. Produced through Thompson's own company, Viva Maude, the film represents another bold step in her artistic evolution. She described her attraction to the role as stemming from her love of creative risk, explaining that she often seeks out characters that scare or challenge her.

Thompson acknowledged that few women of colour have portrayed Hedda on screen, and while representation was not the main motivation behind the project, she credited DaCosta for reimagining classic material in a way that centres new perspectives. Together, they aimed to make Ibsen's world feel vibrant, contemporary, and emotionally accessible, infusing the story with modern energy and style.

Tessa Thompson Shared Experience With Ryan Coogler

The actor also reminisced about her early collaboration with director Ryan Coogler on 'Creed.' She shared how Coogler brought an independent spirit to the studio film, encouraging improvisation and deep partnership with co-star Michael B. Jordan. Many of their spontaneous moments, Thompson revealed, ultimately shaped the film's final script.

When discussing her craft, Thompson emphasised the importance of presence and listening in performance, referencing the Meisner technique as a foundation of her acting. She believes that silence often communicates more than dialogue, and that true connection on screen comes from reacting authentically to scene partners.

Though she once found watching her own performances uncomfortable, Thompson admitted that producing her own projects has helped her view her work more objectively.

With 'Hedda' now continuing its festival run after its London premiere, Tessa Thompson continues to prove that her range—from Marvel hero to psychological drama—makes her one of Hollywood's most fearless and versatile talents.
