Keira Knightley has joined the cast of Audible's new full-cast audiobook series of J.K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter' books, taking on the role of Dolores Umbridge, one of the franchise's most notorious antagonists. Unlike her character, the 40-year-old Academy Award nominee is calling for unity amid controversy surrounding the author’s views on transgender issues.

Keira Knightley confirmed that she was unaware of the ongoing boycott of Rowling's work when she accepted the role and expressed regret over any offence her participation may cause. She emphasised the importance of finding mutual respect despite differing opinions, urging audiences to approach the situation with understanding and empathy.

J.K. Rowling's Controversy

The backlash against Rowling stems from a 2020 essay in which the author criticised aspects of the transgender rights movement, arguing that it could negatively impact cisgender women. Critics have interpreted her statements as rejecting the identities of trans women, a stance that has sparked widespread debate. Rowling's 2023 remarks on social media further fueled criticism, as she framed her views as opposition to compelled speech rather than a direct attack on transgender people.

Many key actors from the 'Harry Potter' film series, including Daniel Radcliffe, have publicly distanced themselves from Rowling’s positions. Radcliffe emphasised that transgender women are women and that denying this identity undermines their dignity. Emma Watson also expressed a nuanced perspective, noting that she can still appreciate Rowling's work while disagreeing with her views on trans rights, prompting a public response from the author.

Cast of 'Harry Potter' Audiobook

Audible's audiobook series, announced in August 2025, features a star-studded cast. Hugh Laurie voices Albus Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen plays Lord Voldemort, and Riz Ahmed portrays Professor Snape. Cush Jumbo serves as narrator, while newcomers Frankie Treadway, Arabella Stanton, and Max Lester round out the younger characters. Keira Knightley joins fellow actors Kit Harington and James McAvoy in the ensemble.

In addition to the audiobook, HBO is preparing the first TV adaptation of the 'Harry Potter' series. The show will feature actors including John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Johnny Flynn, and Nick Frost, bringing the beloved books to the small screen for the first time.
